Here is a note announcing the discovery of a new option for launching in the Cowichan Valley The author has asked to remain anonymous: Hey everyone, I’ve been working on a few new launches in the Cowichan Valley and I’m pleased to finally unveil them. They’re located within a few minutes of each other and offer high elevation launches that, together, accommodate a wide range of wind directions from SE to WSW. They both still need lots of work, so if you’re interested in helping out in any way, either on the organizational/administrative front or with some good old fashion launch and trail building, then please let the community know. There are, of course, limitations with both launches and there are definitely some better overall spots in the Valley; but the combination of easy access, close proximity to town, less strict prevailing wind requirements, the possibility of early launches, and stunning viewpoints all motivated me to start experimenting with airflow at this very special site. The “Holmes plateau” is a beautiful second growth forest, rich in logging history, with abundant wildlife (elk, bear, etc – be bear aware up there) and dotted with pristine little lakes and ponds. There is a spectacular waterfall on the N side of the Meade valley as well. It sounds like much of the area is safe from future logging too so hopefully we can enjoy this area for many years. I’ve really enjoyed just hiking and exploring up there even when I can’t fly, both in sun and snow; so I hope you all enjoy the area and launches as much as I do. Read the PDF at the start of this post for route descriptions and to find the trail.

Access to the Road to launch is provided through agreement with the District of North Cowichan. The gate is loked during fire season. Keys are available by contacting the ISS Site Director. The landing zone is a private hay field. Please respect the owners request. Do not land in a standing crop. Keep the gate closed and respect the land as you would your own. Three launches are available depending on wind direction.
